Teaching 3rd and 4th year MBBS students and diagnosing diseases.

The Department of Pathology at Bangladesh Medical College (BMC) serves as the cornerstone of diagnostic medicine, providing comprehensive laboratory services and histopathological expertise essential for accurate disease diagnosis and treatment planning. Our dedicated team of pathologists and technicians utilizes state-of-the-art equipment to deliver precise diagnostic reports for clinical correlations across all medical specialties.

We perform histopathology, cytopathology, and our department supports patient care, medical education, and research initiatives. We train MBBS and Dental students and contribute to epidemiological studies and quality assurance programs in laboratory medicine.

Department Mission and Objectives

Diagnostic Aspect

To provide accurate, timely, and high-quality histopathological and cytopathological diagnostic services that support optimal patient care and clinical decision-making.

Academic Aspect

Students:

To impart comprehensive theoretical and practical training in pathology to undergraduate MBBS and dental students by conducting regular item examinations, term examinations, and professional examinations.

Teachers:

Regular interdepartmental CME programs are conducted to foster continuous quality improvement, research, and academic development within the department.

Services and Activities

Histopathology: Tissue processing, biopsy analysis, and surgical specimen examination for diagnosis, including non-neoplastic and neoplastic lesions.
Cytopathology: Fine needle aspiration (FNA), Pap smears, and fluid cytology for detection of non-neoplastic and neoplastic lesions.
We emphasize rapid turnaround times, quality control, and correlation of laboratory findings with clinical outcomes to support optimal patient management.
Educational & Research Contributions: Teaching and academic assessment of MBBS students of 3rd and 4th phase.
Workshops on histopathology techniques and quality control.
Research in cancer epidemiology and infectious disease pathology.
Case discussions and tumor board presentations.
The department actively contributes to academic publications and presents research findings at national and international pathology conferences.

Available Laboratories / Units / Special Services

Histopathology Laboratory: Tissue processing, embedding, sectioning, routine and special staining, and reporting.
Cytopathology Unit: Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC), Pap smear, and body fluid cytology services including reporting.
Grossing Room: Specimen reception, dissection, and gross examination of surgical specimens.
Teaching Laboratory: Specimen museum facilities for undergraduate practical classes.

Academic and Clinical Facilities

Demonstration and practical laboratory equipped with microscopes for MBBS and dental undergraduate teaching.
Faculty offices and dedicated reporting areas for consultant pathologists.
